PREMs

Patient-reported experience Measures (PREMs) are PROMs that assess patients’ perspectives and experiences with healthcare. They are increasingly used in healthcare to complement clinical measures and help evaluate the quality of care. PREMs are questionnaires measuring the patients’ perceptions of their experience while receiving care, such as satisfaction, communication, involvement, and accessibility. PREMs can help healthcare providers, commissioners, and other stakeholders make informed service changes and improve patient outcomes.

PROMs and PREMs have demonstrated usefulness in clinical research, quality improvement, patient-centered care, and evidence-based decision-making. Therefore, implementing standardized PROMs and PREMs in routine clinical settings is crucial for promoting quality care and patient-centeredness.

PROMs

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) consist of standardized questionnaires or surveys that measure a patient’s health, symptoms, functional status, and quality of life. These tools provide insight into the patient’s perspective, which is essential in evaluating healthcare interventions and treatments.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery PROMs

Our client wanted to build and manage a PROMs project that would involve sending automated survey invitations to their patients. For this purpose, we used the BREAST-Q© instrument and the REDCap® platform. The project covers a wide range of breast cancer operations, including oncoplastic and aesthetic breast surgeries. It consists of fourteen unique pre- and post-operative surveys automatically sent to the patient at pre-set time points after their operation.

To initiate the process, the patient’s name and contact details are entered into the program, along with the operation name and date. The patient is then sent a pre-operative PROMs survey that is specific to their operation. After the operation, a cascade of unique post-operative PROMs surveys are automatically sent to the patient at pre-set timepoints. The scales used in the surveys were carefully selected to cover all aspects of aesthetics, breast cancer, and reconstruction surgery. They were also remapped within the BREAST-Q© user rights to match modern oncoplastic breast surgery and new aesthetic procedures such as Goldilocks mastectomy, LiCAP, AiCAP, lipomodelling, and fat-only augmentation.

The patient’s responses are automatically added to the database, and the outcome measures (also called Q or Rasch scores) are instantly calculated. The pre-designed report templates are easily accessible by clicking the links provided and are updated in real-time.
